President Trump Signs Spending Bill, Ending Three Day Government Shutdown

President Trump signed a bill extending government funding to February 8th on Monday evening, ending the three day government shutdown. The temporary funding measure is the fourth continuing resolution passed by Congress since September.

Senate Democrats agreed to end their filibuster of the funding bill after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promised to hold a vote on immigration reform. The Senate Democrats demanded the funding bill restore the deferred action for childhood arrivals program, which granted legal protections to children who were brought to the United States by undocumented immigrants. Republicans refused to tie immigration reform to the must-pass legislation.

The funding bill also, funds the Children's Health Insurance Program for six years.

In a written statement, President Trump said he "pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses and are now willing to fund our great military, border patrol, first responders and insurance for vulnerable children."
