A Texas police officer has been charged with murder after he fatally shot an unarmed Black man who was trying to break up a fight. Shaun David Lucas, 31, an officer with the Wolfe City Police Department, responded to a domestic disturbance call outside of a convenience store on Saturday (October 3) night. When Lucas arrived at the scene, he attempted to arrest Jonathan Price, who had intervened and tried to break up the fight.
A statement from the Texas Rangers said that Price "resisted in a non-threatening posture and began walking away," when Lucas deployed his taser and discharged his weapon, striking Price multiple times. Price was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Following an investigation into the shooting, it was determined that "the actions of Officer Lucas were not objectionably reasonable."
Price's father said that his son was a good man and he was just trying to do the right thing by breaking up a fight between a man and a woman.
"I loved my son, and I tried to bring him up to do the right thing," said Junior Price, Jonathan's father.
On Monday night, a crowd of people marched down the town's Main Street and held a vigil for Price outside of the convenience store.
"I hope everybody that comes into this town realizes that we are a strong community, and we are backing Black and white," resident Shelly Ballard told KDFW. "There is no color difference in this town."
