FACEBOOK: Explains Outage

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • It took longer to explain the problem than to fix it. Someone needs to get Mark Zuckerberg a better head of PR.
  • It's not like they'd admit it if it really were a hack.
  • This explanation makes a lot more sense than a denial-of-service hack. Facebook has systems in place to defend and work around those. This was almost surely human error somewhere upstream.

Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp all suffered an outage starting at about noon. ET. The company tweeted in the afternoon that it was working on the issue, but didn't specify what the problem was. But now we know.

The social media giant says a change to a server configuration -- which routes traffic through its various systems -- was to blame. That change triggered a series of cascading problems, taking all four applications offline.

Although most users were able to get back onto the services by yesterday evening, the issue wasn't entirely resolved until this morning (Thursday). (USA Today)
