It's about time.

Memo to Johnson, that's how holidays are celebrated in America.

Who doesn't want another day off?

The bill passed by unanimous consent and now goes to the House, where it's expected to pass. It'll then go to President Biden, who is expected to sign it into law.

Juneteenth, which is celebrated on June 19th, marks the emancipation of African Americans who were held as slaves. In 1865, slaves in Galveston, Texas found out that they were free at last.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made a motion to pass the legislation by unanimous consent more than 150 years later. Though Republican Senator Ron Johnson backed off his opposition to the bill, he gave it a lukewarm response, saying, "While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter.” (Yahoo!
